UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS - $2,948,066THESE PROGRAMS PROVIDE SCHOLARSHIPS AND FORGIVABLE LOANS, TOTALING UP TO $55,000 PER YEAR FOR EXCEPTIONAL STUDENTS WITH FINANCIAL NEED TO PURSUE AN UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION AT AN ACCREDITED INSTITUTION IN THE U.S. OR ABROAD. UNDERGRADUATE TRANSFER SCHOLARSHIPS PROVIDE FUNDING FOR THE LAST TWO-TO-THREE YEARS OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDY AT A FOUR-YEAR COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY. COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS ARE AWARDED TO THE FOUNDATION'S ELIGIBLE GRADUATING YOUNG SCHOLARS OR TO SELECTED APPLICANTS WHO APPLY EACH YEAR TO A NATIONAL POOL, FOR UP TO FOUR YEARS OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDY. ELIGIBLE UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARS MAY ALSO RECEIVE TRAVEL STIPENDS AND SUMMER STIPEND SUPPORT TO PARTICIPATE IN UNPAID INTERNSHIPS. DIRECT PROGRAM EXPENSES INCLUDE SCHOLAR ADVISING, OTHER SCHOLAR SUPPORT SUCH AS TEST PREPARATION AND TUTORING, PROGRAM MANAGEMENT, AND SCHOLAR OUTREACH AND SELECTION. IN ADDITION TO THESE DIRECT COSTS, THE FOUNDATION PROVIDED CASH BASIS FUNDING TO 159 UNDERGRADUATE TRANSFER SCHOLARS FOR A TOTAL OF $3.2 MILLION AND 393 COLLEGE SCHOLARS FOR A TOTAL OF $4.8 MILLION. INTERNSHIP STIPENDS WERE PAID TO 47 SCHOLARS FOR A TOTAL OF $265 THOUSAND. THE FOUNDATION ALSO REPAID LOANS ON BEHALF OF 110 SCHOLARS FOR A TOTAL OF $763 THOUSAND.YOUNG SCHOLARS PROGRAM - $2,660,061THIS PROGRAM SERVES EXCEPTIONAL SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH FINANCIAL NEED WHO RESIDE IN THE U.S. BY PROVIDING INDIVIDUALIZED EDUCATIONAL SERVICES THAT COMPLEMENT THE STUDENTS' EDUCATION AND FURTHER DEVELOP THEIR TALENTS AND ABILITIES THROUGHOUT HIGH SCHOOL. DIRECT PROGRAM EXPENSES INCLUDE PERSONNEL COSTS FOR ADVISING STUDENTS AND FAMILIES ON EDUCATIONAL MATTERS OF $2,971 PER STUDENT FOR A TOTAL OF $817,000. OTHER PROGRAM EXPENSES INCLUDE PROGRAM MANAGEMENT AND SCHOLAR OUTREACH AND SELECTION COSTS. IN ADDITION TO THESE DIRECT COSTS, THE FOUNDATION PROVIDED CASH BASIS SCHOLARSHIP FUNDING FOR 268 YOUNG SCHOLARS FOR A TOTAL OF $1.7 MILLION.GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS - $673,398THROUGH THE GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS, THE FOUNDATION AWARDS GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS TOTALING UP TO $150,000 PER STUDENT TO BE USED FOR UP TO FOUR YEARS OF GRADUATE SCHOOL STUDY FOR CURRENT SCHOLARS COMING OUT OF THE FOUNDATION'S UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS. RECIPIENTS OF THE GRADUATE AWARD CAN APPLY FOR THE JACK KENT COOKE INTERNATIONAL AWARD WHICH PROVIDES UP TO $85,000 ANNUALLY FOR UP TO 4 YEARS OF GRADUATE STUDY AT OXFORD OR CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITIES, PLUS AN INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL STIPEND AND MAY ALSO RECEIVE SUMMER STIPEND SUPPORT TO PARTICIPATE IN UNPAID INTERNSHIPS. SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM INFORMATION |
THE JACK KENT COOKE FOUNDATION, A PRIVATE, INDEPENDENT FOUNDATION, WAS ESTABLISHED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE WILL OF MR. JACK KENT COOKE TO ADVANCE THE EDUCATION OF EXCEPTIONALLY PROMISING STUDENTS WHO HAVE FINANCIAL NEED. THE FOUNDATION DOES THIS PRIMARILY THROUGH DIRECT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS TO HIGH SCHOOL, UNDERGRADUATE, COMMUNITY COLLEGE TRANSFER, AND GRADUATE STUDENTS. IT ALSO INVESTS IN EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVES AND MAKES GRANTS TO PROGRAMS THAT ARE ALIGNED WITH THE FOUNDATION'S MISSION. THE FOUNDATION WAS INCORPORATED AS A VIRGINIA NONSTOCK CORPORATION IN 1997, WITH 2001 BEING ITS FIRST OPERATIONAL FISCAL YEAR. THROUGH ITS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS - NATIONAL IN SCOPE - THE FOUNDATION IS ABLE TO INDIVIDUALLY SUPPORT EXCEPTIONALLY HIGH PERFORMING STUDENTS WHO HAVE FINANCIAL NEED. THESE PROGRAMS ARE SUMMARIZED BELOW:* THE GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP ENABLES SELECTED NEW AND RECENT GRADUATES OF THE FOUNDATION'S UNDERGRADUATE TRANSFER SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM AND COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM TO PURSUE UP TO FOUR YEARS OF GRADUATE STUDY AT AN ACCREDITED GRADUATE OR PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTION IN THE U.S. OR ABROAD. THE FOUNDATION'S AWARDS SUPPORT STUDENTS STUDYING IN ANY DISCIPLINE AND PROVIDE FUNDING FOR TUITION, ROOM AND BOARD, REQUIRED FEES AND HEALTH INSURANCE, AND OTHER EDUCATIONAL EXPENSES SUCH AS BOOKS, TECHNOLOGY, AND CHILD-CARE. WHILE SCHOLARSHIP AMOUNTS VARY BASED ON SEVERAL FACTORS, INCLUDING COSTS AT THE INSTITUTION EACH RECIPIENT ATTENDS, THE CURRENT AWARD FUNDS UP TO $150,000 AND CAN BE USED OVER A FOUR-YEAR PERIOD (WITH A MAXIMUM OF $75,000 IN ANY GIVEN YEAR). SCHOLARS ARE CHOSEN FROM AMONG THOSE WHO APPLY THROUGH AN OPEN APPLICATION PROCESS.* THE INTERNSHIP STIPEND PROGRAM PROVIDES A SUMMER STIPEND OF UP TO $6,000 TO ELIGIBLE STUDENTS IN ALL OF THE FOUNDATION'S HIGHER EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS AND TO THE FOUNDATION'S GRADUATING YOUNG SCHOLARS WHO HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED TO THE COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM. THE INTERNSHIP STIPEND SUPPORTS SCHOLARS WHO PARTICIPATE IN UNPAID INTERNSHIPS AT NON-PROFIT OR GOVERNMENT ENTITIES. SCHOLARS MUST APPLY TO THE FOUNDATION FOR SUPPORT AND DOCUMENT THEIR PARTICIPATION IN THE INTERNSHIP.THE FOUNDATION SELECTS RECIPIENTS OF THESE SCHOLARSHIPS BY EXAMINING SPECIFIC STUDENT CHARACTERISTICS, INCLUDING ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AND ABILITY, UNMET FINANCIAL NEED, LOVE OF LEARNING, PERSISTENCE, LEADERSHIP, SERVICE TO OTHERS AND OTHER ATTRIBUTES THAT MR. COOKE BELIEVED WOULD BE VITAL DIMENSIONS OF THE EXCEPTIONAL INDIVIDUALS HE WANTED TO ENCOURAGE AND SUPPORT THROUGH THE FOUNDATION.THROUGH ITS GRANT-MAKING PROGRAMS AND PROGRAM-RELATED INVESTMENTS, THE FOUNDATION SUPPORTS BROADER NUMBERS OF STUDENTS BY FUNDING ORGANIZATIONS THAT PURSUE GOALS RELATED TO OUR MISSION. THESE INVESTMENTS INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:* COLLEGE ACCESS AND SUCCESS PROGRAMS: BY PROVIDING COUNSELING AND SCHOLARSHIPS, THE FOUNDATION'S COLLEGE ACCESS PROGRAMS AIM TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF HIGH-ACHIEVING STUDENTS WITH FINANCIAL NEED WHO UNDERSTAND THE VALUE OF POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION, KNOW HOW TO APPLY FOR ADMISSION AND FINANCIAL AID, AND ENROLL IN AND GRADUATE FROM THE COLLEGE AT WHICH THEY ARE MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED. IN FISCAL YEAR 2022, THE FOUNDATION AWARDED $2.8 MILLION TO GRANTEES THROUGH THIS PROGRAM WHICH INCLUDED $2 MILLION TO SUPPORT HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES.* ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS: THE FOUNDATION FUNDS ORGANIZATIONS THAT PROVIDE SUMMER OR YEAR-ROUND ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS THAT CHALLENGE AND INSPIRE STUDENTS THROUGH MEANINGFUL, HIGH-QUALITY EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES.
