LANNAN FOUNDATION PRODUCES THE VERY POPULAR READINGS & CONVERSATIONS SERIES FEATURING INSPIRED LITERARY WRITERS OF FICTION, NONFICTION, AND POETRY, AS WELL AS CULTURAL FREEDOM ADVOCATES WITH A SOCIAL, POLITICAL, AND ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE FOCUS, TO READ AND DISCUSS THEIR WORK IN A PUBLIC SETTING IN SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO. THE SERIES BEGINS EACH SEPTEMBER AND RUNS THROUGH MAY OF THE FOLLOWING YEAR. A TYPICAL READINGS & CONVERSATIONS EVENING LASTS FOR ABOUT 2 HOURS, WITH THE SPEAKER OR WRITER READING/SPEAKING ON HIS OR HER WORK AND THEN HAVING A CONVERSATION WITH ANOTHER WRITER, POET, EDITOR, JOURNALIST OR SUBJECT SPECIALIST. THE COMMUNITY OUTREACH COMPONENT OF LANNAN'S PUBLIC PROGRAM SERIES DISTRIBUTES BETWEEN 100 AND 200 TICKETS AND BOOKS TO STUDENTS AND TEACHERS FREE OF CHARGE FOR EACH EVENT. IN ADDITION, NEARLY THREE-QUARTERS OF THE VISITING AUTHORS AND SPEAKERS WILL MAKE A CLASSROOM VISIT, TALKING DIRECTLY WITH STUDENTS AND TEACHERS ABOUT THEIR WORK. PLEASE NOTE THE EVENTS PREVIOUSLY ENTITLED IN PURSUIT OF CULTURAL FREEDOM CONTINUED TO BE PRESENTED BUT WERE INCORPORATED INTO THE READINGS & CONVERSATIONS SERIES TITLE. ALL EVENTS ARE AUDIO-TAPED AND VIDEO-TAPED. THE AUDIO AND VIDEO RECORDINGS OF EACH EVENT ARE AVAILABLE WITHIN 7- 10 DAYS IN THE AUDIO ARCHIVE AREA OF LANNAN FOUNDATION'S WEBSITE, WWW.LANNAN.ORG, AS WELL AS ON NUMEROUS PUBLIC MEDIA SITES SUCH AS YOUTUBE. WELL OVER 500 TICKETS ARE DISTRIBUTED TO ATTENDEES OF THE LIVE EVENTS EACH YEAR, AND THOUSANDS OF VISITS ARE MADE TO THE FOUNDATION WEBSITE ANNUALLY. |

THE EXHIBITION PROGRAM WAS ESTABLISHED TO SUPPORT THE CREATION OF NEW WORK AND TO GIVE GREATER EXPOSURE TO CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS. IN 1981 J. PATRICK LANNAN, SR. FOUNDED THE LANNAN MUSEUM IN LAKE WORTH, FLORIDA. HOUSED IN A RENOVATED ART DECO MOVIE THEATRE, THE MUSEUM BUILDING WAS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE AN ENVIRONMENT FOR THE PRESENTATION OF SELECTIONS FROM THE COLLECTION AS WELL AS TEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS. ARTISTS PRESENTED AT THE LANNAN MUSEUM INCLUDED GREG COLSON, KATHY MUEHLEMANN, ED RUSCHA, AND JAMES TURRELL.AFTER THE FOUNDATION RELOCATED TO LOS ANGELES IN JULY 1990, NEW GALLERIES WERE INAUGURATED WITH PRESENTATIONS OF PAINTINGS BY GERMAN ARTIST GERHARD RICHTER AND A MONUMENTAL SCULPTURE, THE TABLES, BY NEW YORK-BASED ARTIST TOM OTTERNESS. SUBSEQUENT EXHIBITIONS INCLUDED WORK BY ARTISTS SIAH ARMAJANI, CHRIS BURDEN, CHUCK CLOSE, LYNN DAVIS, ROBERT FRANK, GARY SIMMONS, AND BILL VIOLA AMONG SEVERAL THEMATIC GROUP PRESENTATIONS.THE CURRENT EXHIBITION PROGRAM IN SANTA FE PRESENTS BETWEEN ONE AND THREE EXHIBITIONS PER YEAR. EXHIBITIONS ARE FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC FOR INDIVIDUAL VISITS, AS WELL AS THOSE BY SCHOOLS, CLUBS, AND OTHER GROUPS. THE FOUNDATION ALSO PROVIDED SUPPORT FOR EXHIBITIONS AT SITE SANTA FE IN SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO. |

THE LANNAN WRITING RESIDENCY FELLOWSHIP PROVIDES UNINTERRUPTED WRITING TIME FOR POETS, WRITERS, ESSAYISTS, TRANSLATORS, SCHOLARS AND CURATORS, AS WELL AS INDIGENOUS, ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL JUSTICE ACTIVISTS. RESIDENCY DURATIONS ARE USUALLY FROM FOUR TO SIX WEEKS, AND RESIDENCY FELLOWS OFTEN GIVE READINGS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC AT NO CHARGE.SINCE THE FALL OF 2000, MORE THAN 360 RESIDENCY FELLOWS HAVE BEEN HOUSED IN LANNAN PROPERTIES IN MARFA, TEXAS, A SMALL, BEAUTIFUL, HIGH DESERT RANCHING TOWN IN WEST TEXAS NEAR THE CHINATI MOUNTAINS TO THE SOUTHWEST AND THE DAVIS MOUNTAINS TO THE NORTHEAST. MARFA IS ALSO HOME TO THE INTERNATIONALLY KNOWN CHINATI FOUNDATION, A CONTEMPORARY ART ORGANIZATION FOUNDED BY THE LATE SCULPTOR, DONALD JUDD. LANNAN FOUNDATION RESIDENCIES HAVE PROVIDED CREATIVE INSPIRATION FOR AN UNTOLD NUMBER OF PUBLISHED WORKS OF FICTION, POETRY AND NONFICTION, AND OTHER WORKS OF ART.CANDIDATES FOR THE RESIDENCY PROGRAM ARE SELECTED THROUGH AN INTERNAL NOMINATION PROCESS.
