Return Reference Explanation
PART II-B, LINE 1: Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) engages in limited amounts of lobbying activities to further its mission to preserve the natural systems on which all life depends. In FY2020, EDF spent a total of $8,933,155, which comprises 4.56% of its total expenditures, on influencing legislation. Consistent with its tax-exempt purpose, EDFs lobbying activities were focused on the protection of the preservation of natural systems on which all life depends. In a year of extraordinary challenges, Environmental Defense Fund has helped spur remarkable progress thanks to our supporters. Together, we advanced environmental protection around the world - even when the world was locked down by the COVID-19 pandemic. EDFs collaborative approach demonstrates the power of understanding diverse perspectives, whether times are good or bad. In 2020, it helped us move forward despite strong political headwinds in the United States. We banded together and persevered despite the challenges faced during a pandemic. We know that healing starts with listening, something EDF will be working on harder than ever in the months and years to come. We pledge to listen and lift the voices of the most harmed by pollution, natural disasters, and climate change to be heard. With environmental progress temporarily blocked in Washington, D.C., EDF found many other ways to help people and nature prosper by: - Prevailing in most court cases against the Trump administration to defend environmental laws. - Mapping air pollution with local groups in hard-hit neighborhoods to show how communities of color are unfairly affected. - Prompting 15 states, including California and New York, that together represent about one-third of the truck market, to commit that 30% of medium- and heavy-duty trucks and buses sold in their jurisdictions will be zero emission by 2030. - MOMS CLEAN AIR FORCE continues with its energy and momentum to the groundswell of climate action to demand action on the environment. Providing testimony before members of the U.S. House of Representatives and demanding 'Justice in Every Breath' for every policy impacting the health and well-being of children. - Working with companies to identify and introduce safer ingredients. - Challenging businesses to slash emissions. Thus far more than 1,500 companies with over $11 trillion in revenue have committed to a net zero future. - Providing farmers with new technology to make the most of precious freshwater supplies. - Securing bipartisan legislation that unlocks millions of dollars to restore natural defenses. - EDF played a major role in developing bipartisan bills on issues like declining limits on greenhouse gases, sustainable agriculture, and clean energy innovation. - The Moving Forward Act that passed the U.S. House incorporates 18 of EDFs policy recommendations. - Reviving imperiled fisheries while improving food supplies and boosting livelihoods around the world. EDF accomplishes its lobbying objectives through both in-house staff and outside consultants, who assist with strategizing and planning, and through grassroots and direct communications. EDFs largest lobby expenditure during FY2020 was a grant of $8.7M provided to Environmental Defense Action Fund (EDAF), the political action partner and affiliated 501(c)(4) organization of EDF. The purpose of the grant was to provide general support for the educational and lobbying activities of EDAF in furtherance of its mission, which is consistent with the shared program objectives of EDF and EDAF. As required by law, EDAF is restricted from using any of the EDF lobby grant funds for political campaign activities under the terms of the grant agreement between EDF and EDAF.
