HMH ALSO PROVIDED $18.0 MILLION IN UNREIMBURSED COSTS OF MEDICAID AND OTHER MEANS-TESTED GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS. HMH, THROUGH HOUSTON METHODIST'S EXTERNAL CHARITY CARE PROGRAM, ALSO PROVIDED A TOTAL OF $4.4 MILLION FOR SERVICES TO THE MEDICALLY NEEDY, THROUGH EXTERNAL ORGANIZATIONS THAT ARE MEETING THE HEALTH CARE NEEDS THAT HOUSTON METHODIST HAS IDENTIFIED AS PRIORITIES.AN INTERNAL CHARITY CARE PROGRAM PROVIDES SERVICES TO THE INDIGENT AT HMH AND THROUGH AFFILIATED ORGANIZATIONS. HOUSTON METHODIST DEPARTMENT OF INFECTIOUS DISEASE ALSO HOSTED WEBINARS ON COVID-19 WHICH FOCUSED ON TOPICS INCLUDING CORONAVIRUS SYMPTOMS, VIRUS TRANSMISSION AND MAINTAINING SAFETY DURING THE PANDEMIC.STARTING ON DECEMBER 16, 2020, HOUSTON METHODIST BEGAN DISTRIBUTING COVID-19 VACCINES TO HEALTH CARE WORKERS AND FIRST RESPONDERS. VACCINES WERE EXTENDED TO COMMUNITY MEMBERS ACROSS THE GREATER HOUSTON AREA STARTING ON JANUARY 4, 2021, HOUSTON METHODIST WAS DESIGNATED BY THE STATE AS A COVID VACCINE HUB. WITH THIS DESIGNATION, HOUSTON METHODIST EXTENDED ITS WORK TO ENSURE EMPHASIS ON EQUITABLE ACCESS FOR THE MOST VULNERABLE WITHIN THE COMMUNITY. TO ENSURE EQUITABLE ACCESS OF THE COVID-19 VACCINES, HOUSTON METHODIST PARTNERED WITH COMMUNITY HEALTH CLINICS, SOCIAL SERVICES PROVIDERS, FAITH ORGANIZATIONS, SCHOOLS, GOVERNMENT LEADERS AND CIVIC GROUPS TO TARGET UNDERSERVED AREAS. THIS TARGETED OUTREACH FOCUSED ON RAISING AWARENESS OF THE IMPORTANCE OF VACCINATION AND PROVIDING EDUCATION ON THE VACCINES, WHICH ALLOWED HOUSTON METHODIST TO MEET THE COMMUNITY WHERE THEY ARE. HOUSTON METHODIST HOSTED A TOTAL OF 52 COMMUNITY VACCINE CLINICS WHICH DISTRIBUTED OVER 5,000 DOSES OF THE COVID-19 VACCINE. MORE THAN 40 COMMUNITY PARTNERS WERE ENGAGED IN THIS COLLABORATIVE EFFORT WITH HMH MSA INCLUDING HOUSTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE EASTSIDE CAMPUS, BAKER RIPLEY GULFTON SHARPSTOWN, UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON DOWNTOWN AND MORE.AT THE CONCLUSION OF 2021, HOUSTON METHODIST DISTRIBUTED A TOTAL OF 1,042,482 VACCINE DOSES, INCLUDING INITIAL SHOTS AND BOOSTER SHOTS, TO INDIVIDUALS FIVE YEARS OF AGE AND OLDER ACROSS THE GREATER HOUSTON AREA. OF THE DISTRIBUTED VACCINATIONS, 228,777 DOSES WERE PROVIDED BY THE VACCINE CLINIC LOCATED AT HMH. HOUSTON METHODIST CONTINUED EFFORTS TO PROVIDE THE COMMUNITY ACCESS TO THE COVID-19 VACCINE THROUGH WALK-IN CLINICS AND APPOINTMENT SCHEDULING. TO ALSO HELP THE COMMUNITY OVERCOME BARRIERS TO ACCESSING THE VACCINE, HOUSTON METHODIST OFFERED MORE THAN 800 RIDES TO ENSURE TRANSPORTATION WAS NOT A BARRIER AND ALSO ENSURE ALL INFORMATION PROVIDED ON THE VACCINE WAS OFFERED IN ENGLISH AND SPANISH IN RECOGNITION OF SPANISH BEING THE SECOND MOST SPOKEN LANGUAGE IN GREATER HOUSTON. A PROMINENT COMMUNITY BENEFIT PROGRAM PROVIDED IS HOUSTON METHODIST'S I CARE IN ACTION PROGRAM. I CARE IN ACTION ALLOWS HOUSTON METHODIST EMPLOYEES TIME OFF TO VOLUNTEER AT COMMUNITY CHARITIES. BY ALLOWING EMPLOYEES TIME OFF TO VOLUNTEER, HOUSTON METHODIST HELPS COMMUNITY AGENCIES SAVE FINANCIAL RESOURCES SO THAT MORE OF THEIR FUNDS CAN GO TOWARDS PROVIDING DIRECT CARE TO THEIR UNDERSERVED PATIENT AND CLIENT BASE. THE PROGRAM HAS MORE THAN 40 AGENCIES AVAILABLE FOR EMPLOYEES TO SUPPORT. AGENCIES WITH VOLUNTEERS VIA THE I CARE IN ACTION PROGRAM INCLUDED HOUSTON FOOD BANK, SPECIAL PALS AND MEDICAL BRIDGES.IN 2021, HMH EMPLOYEES PROVIDED 1,284 VOLUNTEER HOURS THROUGH I CARE IN ACTION. THESE DONATED HOURS EQUATE TO A VOLUNTEER TIME VALUE OF $64,274. TYPICALLY, OVERALL VOLUNTEER HOURS ARE MUCH HIGHER FOR HOUSTON METHODIST. HOWEVER, DUE TO COVID-19 LIMITATIONS, MANY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES WERE LIMITED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. DESPITE THE PANDEMIC CHALLENGES, HOUSTON METHODIST STILL PROVIDED SPECIAL VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES THROUGH A SYSTEMWIDE BIKE BUILD IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CHANGING YOUNG CHILDREN'S LIVES THROUGH EDUCATION (CYCLE) HOUSTON, WHERE 268 BIKES WERE BUILT, 495 WATER BOTTLES DECORATED AND OVER 700 ENCOURAGEMENT CARDS WERE WRITTEN TO REWARD STUDENTS IN TITLE ONE SCHOOLS ACROSS THE GHA WHO HAVE MET THEIR ACADEMIC GOALS. ACROSS THE SYSTEM, A TOTAL OF 2,360 VOLUNTEER HOURS WERE PROVIDED VIA I CARE IN ACTION. IN ADDITION TO THE I CARE IN ACTION PROGRAM; TIME WAS ALLOCATED TO SUPPORT ADDITIONAL COMMUNITY-FOCUSED ACTIVITIES TO HELP MEET SPECIFIC COMMUNITY NEEDS. ACTIVITIES INCLUDED PARTICIPATION IN OR PROVIDING A SERVICE FOR THE FOLLOWING: UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN, EMPLOYEE BLOOD DRIVES, THE ADOPT-A-FAMILY PROGRAM AND MORE. THE ADOPT-A-FAMILY HOLIDAY DONATION PROGRAM RESULTED IN 170 FAMILIES AND 502 CHILDREN BEING ADOPTED BY HOUSTON METHODIST IN 2021.HMH PROMOTES THE HEALTH OF THE COMMUNITY BY FULFILLING HOUSTON METHODIST'S MISSION THROUGH EXCEPTIONAL, HIGH-QUALITY PATIENT CARE, EDUCATION AND RESEARCH, AFFILIATIONS WITH ACADEMIC AND MEDICAL PARTNERS FOR IMPROVED COMMUNITY HEALTH CARE, CHARITY CARE AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT.HMH ALSO COOPERATES WITH LOCAL ENTITIES TO IDENTIFY COMMUNITY NEEDS. ESTABLISHED IN 2001, THE DENVER HARBOR FAMILY HEALTH CENTER, A CLINIC UNDER THE VECINO HEALTH CENTERS UMBRELLA - PROVIDES MEDICAL, DENTAL, AND COUNSELING SERVICES TO FAMILIES OF ALL AGES WITHIN THE COMMUNITY. IN ADDITION TO PROVIDING STAFF VIA THE HOUSTON METHODIST FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAM, HMH ALSO PROVIDES FUNDING AND IN-KIND SERVICES, INCLUDING CARDIOLOGY SPECIALTY STAFF, IMMUNIZATIONS, AND LABORATORY TESTING. VECINO HEALTH CENTERS - DENVER HARBOR FAMILY HEALTH CENTER IS JUST ONE OF MANY COLLABORATIVE PARTNERS THAT HMH HAS FOSTERED THROUGH ITS COMMUNITY OUTREACH EFFORTS. FOR 2021, 728 PATIENTS WERE SEEN VIA THE HOUSTON METHODIST COMMUNITY SCHOLARS PROGRAM. IN ADDITION TO THE PATIENT BEING SEEN WITHIN THE COMMUNITY PARTNER CLINIC BY HOUSTON METHODIST PHYSICIANS AND FELLOWS, IF A PATIENTS HEALTH CARE NEEDS EXCEEDED THE SCOPE OF CAPABILITY OF CARE WITHIN THE COMMUNITY CLINIC SETTING, THEY WERE REFERRED INTO HMH FOR MEDICALLY NECESSARY TREATMENT TO GET THEM ON THE PATHWAY TO HEALTH AND HEALING. IN 2021, OF THE 700 PATIENTS SEEN VIA SCHOLARS IN THE COMMUNITY, 252 WERE REFERRED INTO HMH FOR ADDITIONAL SERVICES..

CENTERS AND CHARITY CLINICS IN THE GREATER HOUSTON AREA REPRESENTING MORE THAN 43 UNIQUE LOCATIONS THROUGH ITS COMMUNITY NETWORK OF CARE PROGRAM. THE COMMUNITY NETWORK OF CARE PROVIDES FACILITATED REFERRALS TO UNDERSERVED/NON-RESOURCE HOUSTON METHODIST PATIENTS WHO ARE IDENTIFIED AS NEEDING A PRIMARY CARE MEDICAL HOME. IN 2021, 414 PATIENTS WERE CONNECTED TO A CLINIC IN THEIR COMMUNITY. THE PROGRAM PROVIDES TRANSPORTATION AND COPAY ASSISTANCE FOR THE FIRST APPOINTMENT TO ENSURE A WARM HANDOFF AND ASSIST THE PATIENT IN ESTABLISHING CARE AT THEIR NEW MEDICAL HOME.THROUGHOUT 2021, HOUSTON METHODIST, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE HOUSTON FOOD BANK, CONNECTED UNDERSERVED COVID-19-POSITIVE PATIENTS AT SELECT HOUSTON METHODIST EMERGENCY DEPARTMENTS WITH ESSENTIAL FOOD RESOURCES WHILE THEY WERE IN QUARANTINE TO HELP EASE THE DIFFICULTIES THEY FACED WITH ACCESSING FOOD WHILE UNABLE TO LEAVE THEIR HOMES. ELIGIBLE PATIENTS WERE CONTACTED AND OFFERED UNIQUE CODES THAT THEY COULD USE TO RECEIVE TWO WEEKS OF FOOD SUPPORT FROM THE HOUSTON FOOD BANK, DELIVERED RIGHT TO THEIR HOMES. A HOME DELIVERY COMPRISED OF 2-3 BOXES OF SHELF-STABLE FOOD CONTAINING PROTEIN, GRAIN, FRUIT, VEGETABLE, AND DAIRY. EACH DELIVERY WAS DIABETIC/PEANUT ALLERGEN FRIENDLY AND DESIGNED TO SERVE A FAMILY OF 4 FOR 7 DAYS. PATIENTS ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE THE FOOD SUPPORT MUST BE COVID-19-POSITIVE OR FOOD INSECURE AND HIGH-RISK FOR COVID-19. IN 2021, 160 CODES WERE DISTRIBUTED SYSTEM WIDE AT A VALUE OF $20,800.HOUSTON METHODIST IS PLEASED TO HAVE A LONGSTANDING RELATIONSHIP WITH LEGACY COMMUNITY HEALTH, THE LARGEST FEDERALLY QUALIFIED HEALTH CENTER IN THE STATE OF TEXAS WITH 50 COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTERS ACROSS THE STATE AND 41 IN THE GREATER HOUSTON AREA. IN 2021, LEGACY SERVED NEARLY 200,000 COMMUNITY MEMBERS. HOUSTON METHODIST HAS SUPPORTED SUCH LANDMARK PROGRAMS OF THE ORGANIZATION SUCH AS ITS YOUTH RE-ENTRY PROGRAM, THE COMMUNITY SCHOLARS PROGRAM, AND THE COMMUNITY NETWORK OF CARE AND LEGACY BAYTOWN'S FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAM AT HOUSTON METHODIST BAYTOWN HOSPITAL. AS PART OF THE COMMUNITY HEALTH PROGRAM INVESTMENT TO INCREASE HEALTH CARE ACCESS FOR THE UNDERSERVED, HOUSTON METHODIST DESIGNATED A $50 MILLION INVESTMENT FOR LEGACY COMMUNITY HEALTH CAPITAL PROJECTS.
